In the early 1960s the City of Cranston still had four active volunteer fire companies: Fiskeville, Meshanticut, Oak Lawn, and Pawtuxet. On February 25, 1964, the four companies formed the Cranston Volunteer Firefighters League with the intent of promoting cooperation between the member companies, Cranston city government, and the Cranston Fire Department.
The first league muster was held July 18, 1964, at the Boys Training School at Sockanosset for the viewing pleasure of the population. The highlight was the burning of an automobile.
During the 1964 Christmas season the League collected toys for the needy which were distributed through the Cranston District Nurses Association.
The formation of the League brought about a coordinated and unified training program for volunteer firefighters. The first training class graduated in the autumn of 1965. The program was instituted and conducted by Lieutenant Ronald S. Jones of the Cranston Fire Department.
